Description
Key Characteristics
Classification: It is a herbaceous biennial plant (usually grown as an annual) that belongs to the Amaryllidaceae family, in the genus Allium (along with garlic, leeks, and chives).
Edible Part: The main edible part is the bulb, which grows underground and is composed of fleshy, tightly packed, concentric layers (modified leaves) that surround a central bud.
Appearance: The mature bulb is generally spherical or globe-shaped, covered in a dry, papery outer skin (tunic), which can be yellow/brown, red/purple, or white.
Pungency/Flavor: Onions are known for their strong, pungent odor and sharp taste when raw, which is caused by sulfur-rich volatile oils. The release of these oils when chopped is what makes your eyes water.
